Corbett
National Park

Named after Jim Corbett,
the legendary hunter-naturalist, the Corbett National Park streches over
an area of 1300 sq. kms. in the Himalayan foothills with open grasslands,
Sal and riverine forest and the beautiful life-giving Ramganga river that
flows through almost its entire length. Over 50 mammals, 580 birds and 25
reptile species have been listed in Corbett, but it is most famous for the
ever elusive Tiger. The National Park was set up in 1973 and chosen for
Project Tiger of the World Wildlife Fund. Wildlife population includes
Elephants, the Leopard and smaller Cats, Sambar, Chital - the beautiful
spotted Deer, Barking deer, Wild Boar, Sloth and Himalayan Black Bear and
Crocodiles.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Corbett can be reached by six hour drive from Delhi via Moradabad.

SEASON:
15th November to the onset of Monsoon in the mid-June.

Game-viewing by jeep twice
a day, nature walks and bird watching, outings with resident Naturalists.

Ranthambhore
National Park

The Ranthambhore
National park is Rajasthan’s first Project Tiger reserve, named
after a 1000-year old Fort which stands in the Park. The 410 sq. kms.
are covered with dhok, ranj, salai, ber and palm trees. Belts of dry
deciduous forests with ancient banyans and pipals suddenly open
into large grassy meadows. The three water
features Rajbagh lake, Milak Tank and Padam Tank attract a variety
of migratory birds and are covered with pink lotuses on which the
Sambars often feed. The March crocodiles bask on the shores,
the Tigers are on the prowl at the peripheries. The variety of birds
is vast and have their own say. Searching parakeets, whistling
magpies and dancing peacocks abound in the park.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Jaipur is the nearest airport (170 kms). Sawai Madhopur is the
nearest Railhead (9 kms) with train services from Delhi.

SEASON:
October to June.

Bandhavgarh
National Park

Bandhavgarh National Park
in Central India falls within one of India’s few remaining areas of
natural forest. Its steep cliffs, rocky hills covered with 44884 hectares
of dense Sal and Bamboo forests make it an ideal terrain for Tigers.
Wildlife population includes Chital (spotted deer), Sambar, Barking Deer,
Nilgai (blue bull), Chinkara, Chowsingha (four-horned antelope), Gaur (the
world’s largest Oxen), Sloth bear, Wild Boar, Leopard. The avian life
consists of the Paradise Fly Catcher, Malabar-Pied Hornbill and the
Orange-headed Ground Thrush.

HOW TO GET THERE:
Khajuraho airport is the most convenient with daily flight connections
from Delhi, Agra and Varanasi (Distance 210 kms.)

SEASON:
1st November through April. Wildlife viewing by jeep twice a day, bird
watching in the surrounding forests, nature walks and informal talks on
the Wildlife and history of the area by resident Naturalists.

Nagarhole
Sanctuary

Nagarhole, a part of Mysore
plateau and the elephant range that runs through Western Ghats was
established as a Sanctuary in 1954 to cover 571 sq. kms. of rich wildlife
habitat, watered by the Kabini river in the North, Nagarhole supports a
moist and dry decidous forest with predominantly teak, rosewood and ebony
trees.

The wildlife consists of
Elephant, Sambar, Chital, Four-horned Antelope, Slender Loris, Sloth Bear,
Tiger, Leopard, Wild Dog and Otter. The birdlife consists of Cormorants,
Grey-headed fishing Eagles, Crested-hawk Eagles, Malabar Tragron, Malabar-pied
Hornbill, Malabar whistling Thrush.

HOW TO GET THERE :
Arrive at Bangalore airport and from there proceed by car via Mysore
(Distance 240 kms.). BEST TIME : September to May.

Periyar
Wildlife Sanctuary

Through one of India’s 16
tiger reserves Periyar is known for large population of elephants. Wild
elephants in herds
make an unforgetable sight and Periyal is undoubtedly the best place in
India to watch them. Other wildlife here consists of lion tailed Macaque,
Malabar Squirill, Slot bear. The birdlife consists of Dater Cormorant,
Kingfisher, Grey Hornbill, Racket tailed Drango. The reptile life is also
interesting viz. Monitor Lizard, Python, King Cobra, Flying Lizard and
Flying Snake.

HOW TO GET THERE :Nearest airport is Madurai (145 Kms.) and Cochin (190
Kms.). Nearest railhead is Kottayam (114 Kms.)

Arunachal Pradesh

Located on the north-eastern tip of India bordering Burma to the East,
Bhutan on the West and China on the North - Arunachal Pradesh is perhaps
the last small bit of paradise that has survived on earth. Nestling on the
eastern Himalaya, it is watered by five major rivers cascading down from
the Himalaya glaciers Evergreen forest covers more than 60 percent of the
states entire area.

In order to preserve the tribal cultures and the flora and fauna from
visitors, the State Government has put limit on the number of visitors to
the region.

Kanchanzonga
Kingdom

This Himalayan region is a tangled mass of mountains drained by the
Teesta and Rangeet rivers. Wedged between Nepal, Bhutan and the
North Bengal plains, it also borders Tibet. The torrain of the
country rises steeply from near sea level to the mighty Kanchanzonga
at 8500 meters, forming a giant amphitheatre.
